This is a Christmas carol with words from William Morris (1860) set to a French tune written by Marin Marais in 1706 for his opera Alcyone. The melody, written for a dance used in the opera, subsequently became known as a dance tune in French works. Gustav Holst gave the carol more popularity by using it in his Three Carols, written in 1917.
